Whoa!
I just had the coolest idea ever for a fic. It suddenly ocurred to me as I watched the POD music video about the Matrix and Zion that The Matrix can be used for some of the coolest things ever, and I'm not just talking about one fic. This idea could be used for dozens, maybe hundreds, of fics if anyone wanted to.
Anyway, it occured to me that without even doing a Neo and the gang crossover, the Matrix has vast potential for superhero stories. Think about it. Perhaps at some time in the process of perfecting the Matrix, it was decided that instead of having to eject or destroy those people who innately rejected the Matrix on whatever level, they would cater to such abhorrences, and thus the world of comic book heroes was born. A Matrix where a boy born with incredible mental capacities could become Superman and where Kryptonite could the program that controls the neural cables to him, making him lose concentration, or just fiddling with his chemical levels. A Matrix where anybody feeling out of sync could become mutants with control of the very elements and codes of the Matrix. Perhaps agents could be sent as either heroes or villains in order to keep things in order, or simply to keep people to busy to notice anything wrong with reality. The many times in the history of comics when some villain tries to recreate the universe could happen when some psychotic person loses mental connection with fake reality and gains the ability to completely reshape the code.
The first fics that could be written could be a simple history account of that particular version of the Matrix, as is done in the Animatrix for the Second Renaissance. A historical account of the beginning, or just how it all works. But even more cool, could be after, on how the Matrix worked with each particular person, or perhaps what could happen when certain people would realize the truth, or maybe even just how it all ended, if it did. My mind is fritzing just thinking of all the possibilities.
