I can't see the flowers for the trees
Beneath a brazen sky and birthing bees
An aching wound pounds and cleaves
And amidst the golden dirt and leaves
My heart pours out all it owns upon the ground
Without a whisper, but a screaming sound
Below they whisper, below the hollow grass
A hungry man, a hollow boy, a sullen lass
They plead for life, they cling to death
Despite it all, they remain in the depth
You're next they wail, you'll too be gone soon
But I simply smile palely and sing a little tune
Their hands cannot grasp me,
Their fingers cannot touch touch me
For when my liquid life spreads away and out
The moment when I cannot whisper or make a shout
I know the way for which I am to go
It is but a bright shine away, merely a stone's throw
They could not accept the one I seek
Could not lose control for a second nor a week
Small good it does them now, unable to see
But here I cough my last, beneath the shining tree
And where I go, where I'm bound, they'll never know
Brighter than the brilliant sun, whiter than the snow
Beneath a brazen sky and birthing bees
An aching wound pounds and cleaves
And amidst the golden dirt and leaves
My heart pours out all it owns upon the ground
Without a whisper, but a screaming sound
Below they whisper, below the hollow grass
A hungry man, a hollow boy, a sullen lass
They plead for life, they cling to death
Despite it all, they remain in the depth
You're next they wail, you'll too be gone soon
But I simply smile palely and sing a little tune
