Crazy, just crazy.
Sep. 20th, 2005 04:58 pmSo we were going to watch Advent Children in our japenese/anime type club last night. I was to bring it. I put the movie on my flashdrive, but I also had a copy on a disk, just in case. I was going to bring my laptop too, but I figured that would be silly. So we start at 7. First thing I discovered, the computer with projector we got, not so much with the letting me get to my flashdrive. The computer knew it was there, but it just kept giving me an error when I tried to open it. Bastard. Anyway, I ran and got the cd. Thank goodness for redundancy. Copying the file from the cd wasn't hard. Took like 5 minutes or so. Of course, then the computer decided that not only did it like to run insanely slow, but that it wanted to freeze up when unzipping the folder. After a very slow restart, and an attempt at simply starting the movie from inside the zipped folder, it finally unzipped. Naturally, when I tried playing it, I discovered that this particular computer couldn't play avi files. Luckily, we the cart had a net cable, so we hooked it up and downloaded a divx codec real quick. It started playing beautifully, but without sound. We monkeyed with it for a bit before someone discovered the speakers weren't plugged into the computer all the way.
We did finally get to watch the movie, which everyone agreed was awesome, but it took 40 minutes to get it started. It makes for a great story, but it's still annoying. This whole thing actually makes me think about being a CS person. Honestly, I think the only difference between computer people and most others is just that we're stupid enough to keep monkeying with stuff until it works. Like we have a higher tolerance for computer bs or something.
