Having been raised reading the Chronicles of Narnia, I was hesitant to go see the new movie. I don't know every line by heart or anything, but I read them all at least once a year, so I have a decent grasp on all the books. Both previous attempts, the cartoon and the BBC series, were just tremendously well done, especially because they never deviated from the story line. Both movies included all the information, and word for word dialog from the book. Few movies have stuck with me through my life as much as the two The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe movies have. Thus, I went in to the movie, hoping it would be like the previous two, but with better graphics, and hoping desperately they wouldn't rape the book.
Having seen the movie now I can say that while it is a decent movie as movies go, I can't ever watch it again. The movie didn't actually make a whole lot of major deviations or additions to the book, but they tweaked every single thing in there just enough to be...off-putting. Knowing the whole series as I do, I couldn't help but notice bits here and there where clearly you can see that the director didn't know them really. More than that though, is really the dialog. I hated the dialog. They cut out so many of the really significant lines, and nearly all the other lines were "revamped", or something, in order to make them more modern or something. It's almost more disturbing to have the film follow so closely to the book, yet deviate in many tiny little ways. I just felt off-kilter throughout the entire piece. I kept trying to like it, but I really couldn't.
I noticed too that they really seemed to tone down Aslan a bit. They stripped him of some of his power in little ways. Knowing that Aslan is really a Jesus parallel, it's really quite easy to see when people are trying to lessen him.
I shudder to think that a generation of children will grow up with this movie, but I have at least some hope, since so many people went out and got the books to read when they heard about the movie. At least they'll have the real thing.
