Grumblings

You know, I really dislike when people get all bitchy about the Electoral system and want to change it or get rid of it entirely. Yes, it does give a lot of power to the rural areas, but that was the whole point of the electoral system in the first place. The idea was that rural areas are less inclined to make broad, sweeping changes to the way things are done. Thus, the system forces any given leader or group into making concessions and compromises. In effect, it is meant to limit the candidates from being too extreme in either direction. It also makes sure that the small areas packed to the gills with people are not going to be able to dictate policy for the rest of the country. It limits, to an extent, anyone from making huge, sweeping policy changes. Can you imagine what this country would be like if each subsequent president and the like were able to completely change all the laws and policies? Granted, each president has been able to at times make massive changes, and the system, as with any, degrades with time, but at least the idea of it is sound. But I simply shudder at the idea of country whose very laws are like some crazed pendulum, swinging further and further away from the center with each pass, until the whole thing unhinges and flies into the ocean.

Of course, there has yet to be a government that hasn't fallen or been overthrown at some point, as it is the nature of all things in this world to degrade and to move toward chaos, but I prefer if ours were to take its time. I am glad to live in America. There are so many scary alternatives. I just don't like people trying to remove one of the measures put into place in order to keep it from breaking apart at high speeds.

Me!
