Adoption Train
May. 8th, 2007 09:28 pmI've been thinking about adoptions lately, due to various bits of news, conversations, and whatnot. I keep hearing over and over that we as Americans and we as Christians should be adopting more. I do not deny that there are millions of orphans around the world and tens of thousands (I don't know the exact number) here in the US. I keep hearing that if we truly care for kids, then we should just adopt a few here. That is a load of crap, and I say that with all the best intentions.
Our system of adoption and general foster care in this country is a complete joke. It needs to be taken out into a field a shot. I have not heard of a single person who has adopted in this country without having to go through years of complete B.S. and red tape. First of all, the people who run things tend to act as if anyone who wants to adopt is deeply suspect. And at least here in Colorado, the people in charge tend to be extremely racist, prejudiced, and not very reasonable in the least. I talked to a guy who had several foster children that he and his wife looked after, but when they decided to actually adopt their kids, they were denied and smeared, and generally treated very poorly. This is a common occurrence too, as I've heard.
I understand the need to make sure that people who want to adopt are decent and upright, but things are pretty ridiculous; it is no wonder so many people adopt outside the country. Honestly, I think we need to do what they did back in the 1800s, which was an orphan train. Basically they loaded a bunch of orphans on a train and sent it across the country. At every stop, anyone who wanted a kid picked one up. Now, I'm sure a few ended up with a rotten family, but overall, people who want kids want them for good reasons. End rant.
