Yeah right.
Nov. 16th, 2007 09:05 amI've always hated the saying that it's not the destination that matters, it's the journey. I've never been entirely sure why, at least, not enough to properly explain it before, but I've just had this gut feeling that it is a load of crap. Then I realized it. That's the hippy (for lack of a better term) view of life. One can only not care about the destination when one doesn't actually have a destination in mind to begin with, and even that is a lie, because I dare you to tell me that if you end in some torturous position somewhere. "Well, I'm being torn apart on this here torture device, but that's okay, because it's not the destination, it's the journey." Yeah right. The destination is the whole point of the journey. If a hero goes out to save the world and fails, it doesn't matter rat's behind whether or not he had an awesome journey. He failed. Sure, the journey is important too. How you travel and who you meet along the way can make all the difference as to what condition you inevitably arrive in, but if you fail, or end up in the wrong place, it really doesn't matter.
Now, I grant that if the reason for the journey is not terribly important, then not arriving in the place you were aiming for is not a terrible thing in of itself. However, I defy anyone to tell me that it doesn't matter where one ends up at all. Even if you don't care where you end up, you definitely will if the place is a nightmare. No one ends up in some place of horror and atrocity (or even a really bad smell) and says that it was all about the journey. The whole point of the journey is to get to the destination, and if you get to the wrong destination, then your journey was a failure. End rant.
