I wasn't planning on it, but I bought the first season of Lois and Clark the New Adventures of Superman the other day. It was in the impulse buy section of Safeway for $7! It was a good show, and for $7, I was willing to splurge. Totally worth it too. The show reminds me why I 1) love Lois Lane, and 2) love Teri Hatcher. Teri Hatcher's Lois is, to me, the epitome of what Lois Lane is supposed to be. She's spunky, gorgeously cute, quick witted, tough, but genuinely vulnerable, and honestly all-around perfect. Every one of her little expressions and looks has me sighing appreciatively.
Naturally, I can't watch too much of the show without wishing I had a girl like her (though, perhaps, without as much inclination to get herself killed without a real Superman to keep her alive). Mmmmm.
Dean Cain was a decent Superman, to be sure, though, as I say this, the first Superman movie is playing on tv and I have to admire what a spectacular job that Reeve did for the role. Cain didn't have too much a huge difference between his Clark and Superman, other than, perhaps, his teasing banter with Lois. But Reeve takes the cake. His personalities were so completely different between the two. He slouched as Clark, pretended to be an amazing klutz, his voice went up an octave, and he played a bit of a naif and weakling. As Superman, he was strong, confident, had a deeper voice and better posture, and even his suit seemed like part of his body.
I have to grant you that Reeve did have a better budget, so things like his costume and special effects might be better but, still, I appreciate how much of a difference was put into the two personas. I do like, though, how Lois and Clark showed that both Clark and Superman are really two different parts of the same man, rather than one being a simple mask to hide the real personality. Cain's Superman is the part of himself that desires to help, to make a difference in the face of so many bad things that an average person simply cannot do, particularly thwart Luthor.
I don't think that Cain should have done the bumbler that Reeve did, but I do think he should have changed his voice a little, maybe his posture some, and maybe something else. Otherwise, I do enjoy it for what it was. I also quite appreciate Lois and Clark's Jimmy, Lex, and Perry White. I think they had excellent actors playing each part.
