Jan. 20th, 2014 04:51 pmI've had an interesting couple of days this past week. Specifically, I accidentally borked my brand-spanking-new laptop. I was trying to install linux so that I could dual-boot with windows, but windows has become incredibly difficult to work with. I finally got fed up with having an installed system that I couldn't access that I decided to wipe windows altogether and just install linux to the whole thing. Turns out that it wasn't just windows giving me a hard time, but my laptop itself seems to be hardwired for windows such that it wouldn't boot any of the linux distros that I was installing. Needless to say, bullets were being sweat. Thank Jesus though, because something finally worked with kubuntu 13, which is what I had wanted to install anyway. It seems to boot a little kludgy, but it boots, and that is such, such a relief.
The one thing I miss about windows is the games I had on steam. Thankfully, about a third or so of my games work on linux, but none of the ones that I've been spending substantial amounts of time in. In particular, I already much miss Skyrim. I was slowly getting around to beating it, but no chance of that anymore. Also lost are Batman: Arkham Asylum, Borderlands 2, Fallout New Vegas, and a few others. At least I did beat Batman, even if I wanted to go back to it again. Alas.
In other news, whoever the hell thought of making the mice buttons on this laptop part of the mousepad needs to be beaten severely. Seriously, who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have the buttons be part of a sensor? My mouse often jumps across the screen when I try to click something, or doesn't move at all because it senses two fingers at once. Blarg! On the plus side, the keyboard for this laptop is just smashingly excellent. Somehow, the buttons aren't all smushed together and I make so many fewer mistakes when typing, versus other laptops.
