On my drive home this evening I was mulling over a thought that has been on my mind before, but I've forgotten to write down, and it is in regard to the Matrix films. Specifically, I was thinking over the complaint some have had as to the ridiculousness of using humans for batteries when it would have been so much simpler to have used say cows or other livestock, who would have been much easier to placate and create a world for. My thought on the matter is that using people was never as much about needing them as it was because they were humans. I could see it fitting in one of two ways, or even both. The first would be that the machines were never so cruel as willingly wipe them out of existence, and this was the best way to keep them around, but keep them from rising up and trying to wipe them out again. The second idea is that it is (also) a form of revenge. Using your enemy to power yourself, and with them permanently under your control.
