Fic is an interesting concept, I think. I mean, obviously, but specifically I find it interesting how it's a creative outlet that all but one or two people never get publish or even get credit for. Oh sure, many fic writers can put it online and have people read it, but it's sort of really...geeky. There are numerous books out there based on tv series and movies, but there's something legitimate to a book that fic writing, no matter how outstanding, simply cannot accomplish. We can write all the novels, screenplays, and comics we want under the heading of fic, but it's still really embarrassing to ever admit to anyone. I mean, tell someone you've written an x-men or smallville book that they can find in the bookstore, and that's pretty cool. Show them the exact same book online, and it's only fic, and now you're the world's biggest dork. Or so I assume. I'm not really sure why that is. I'd be so thrilled to show a book I'd written to family or friends, but fic? Yikes, not likely.
And regarding the idea of fic, I've been having an incessant, persistent, and, to me, awesome fic idea floating through my head the last few days. It wouldn't leave me alone, so I've started writing it. Like most of my stuff, it doesn't look to be terribly big, but on the other hand it's already at four pages, and none of the crossover peeps have yet started to interact. Not to mention that if I really want to keep going with the story after I've had my fun with them, I can always throw in some zombies, or something, and take the whole thing on the road. Depends on how the writing seizes me. To wet the appetite, or possibly send everyone running for the hills at the enormity of the size, I'm having four completely separate sets of characters all be stuck in a mostly empty food court of an airport due to bad weather. The characters include: Buffy, Xander, Dawn (Post season 7); Wolverine, Jubilee, Spiderman (Indeterminate timeline, and in civies); Clark and Chloe (I have no idea when, or what season, it doesn't really matter anyway); and Dean and Sam (Meh). It's a daunting task of not only writing ten very individualistic characters, but to have them all interact?... Just yikes.
I have to say though, thus far it seems to be working okay. I've watched or read all of them recently enough to have all their voices in my head for the dialog and actions. My Logan, Jubilee, and Peter interaction needs a little tweaking (it's all rough and everything needs a little), but otherwise I quite like it. It is, however, unbelievably nerdy to write such a thing. I feel what tiny bits of ruggedness I may have once possessed just oozing out of me for even suggesting such an event.
