I've been having an idea for ficcage of late. I'm sure it was somehow influenced by Avatar and how types of people led to types of elemental bending, but aside from that, I dunno where all of it came from. Basically, I was thinking about music and singing, and it occurred to me that it would be really cool to have a world wherein magic was harnessed/created/whatever through the use of skills. Mainly, through music. Instead of speaking words in some ancient language, I think it would be so much cooler to have magic be used by means of singing/whistling/humming/banging a drum and what have you (I later realize that it's kind of what bards do in some rpgs, but not exactly the same, so whatever). It would mean those tone deaf would not be able to use it, or at least have the use be really random or something. Then it occurred to me, why not have other skills be possible for magic use? I don't know why, but the idea of weaving and such popped into my head as an example. I would think that certain activities would lend themselves to particular types of magic (less aggressive, for instance), but that the truly interesting, inventive, and masterful people would be able to do completely different and unexpected things.
I don't really have enough yet to actually write anything, but I really like the idea. It's also particularly interesting if different regions, guilds, countries and what-have-you had more of certain types of magic users and certain groups are really secretive about the trade, as many groups tend to be. I can see blacksmiths having mastery over fire, earth/metal, etc., but like with true masters having the ability to grant mobility/life to certain objects. Still rough, but I like it.
I remember now that the idea partially popped into my head when I was putzing around with my guitar. I get a little frustrated with my lack of progress at times, and while I was thinking of that, I also started thinking of magic use being connected to playing.
I also have another idea for a fic, but I don't know if it would play in the same world or not. Basically, it's the idea of heroes (more or less) who don't care one whit about fame, but instead seek to be hidden from the public eye in order to better accomplish whatever needs doing (assassinations in particular require surprise), and they accomplish this by being "sidekicks" to a bumbling and egotistical guy who does want the fame and fortune. By doing great deeds and giving the credit to the bumbler, they get to keep in the background and the front man gets the attention, not to mention the bullseye whenever enemies come calling. Kind of like how Batman has Robin wear that bright, "shoot me" sign of a costume. Maybe I could go the route of some of my favorite novels and have more than one storyline going on at once. I really don't know if I have enough in me to make the kind of stories I have in my head though. Ah well, at least I have the ideas.
