I've been thinking just now about people and God. Very specific, I know. Anyway, I've been thinking about how so many people say, when confronted with something God clearly states in the Bible, be it what is right or wrong or a command, that they can't believe in a loving God who would say/do/command such a thing. There are a few variants of that line, but they don't really differ much in the idea that they refuse to accept that "their" god is like that. Here's the thing, though: what people really reveal in those moments is that they aren't believing in God at all. Rather, they believe in some fairytale creation of their own desires, taking a few things here and there from the real God, but then molding truth until it fits what they want it to. That is clearly not God. That's not even fairytale gods.

No, the only way we truly know God is through his word. It's what he gave us to know about him, and it clearly describes a God who is unchanging, ultimate, personal, and with personality. The true and living God is both just and merciful. He gave us law to show that we cannot keep it due to our wickedness, that we can never attain true goodness on our own, then sent his son to take the death that we deserve, that we might have his goodness. The problem, when people say that their god's not like that, or wouldn't have said that, is that they are calling the very, and only, words we have from him lies.

In essence, such people are making themselves the final arbiters of truth, even over historical fact. And it's one thing to say that you don't believe the Bible is truly the word of God, but when a person claims to believe in the God of the Bible only to turn around and claim authority over which parts of it are truth, then they show themselves to be the true liars. To cut off the branch upon which one stands is pure and utter stupidity.

The Bible says that there is a way that seems right to a man, but leads to death. It also says that the heart is utterly wicked and cannot be trusted. All those who do these things only prove these verses correct.
