I was reading this article by Al Mohler, and thinking about what it means for us all. Ours is one of the most obviously narcissistic generations (though sadly, not always so obvious to ourselves), yet we talk a good game. That's really where the subtlety comes in. Ours is the generation that is piece by piece rejecting every absolute and solid truth, while at the same time claiming to follow our own personal little guidelines. We are like the child who, when told not to touch or do something, says he or she won't, all while sidling closer and closer to it. Or perhaps we are more like the dog, who wags at us when we tell it no, and goes for it anyway. "No Fido, don't eat that!" Wag. Chomp.

As the article says, so many of our age say that they believe in this or that, but that something doesn't "fit them" in some way, as if to excuse their half-hearted attempts and reasoning. We are fools, plain and simple, too tied up in our selves to bother testing truth. We grab for whatever feels good without asking whether it's really all that good for us or not. There's a reason we have to keep our pets away from antifreeze: it has a flavor that entices animals to drink it, which then crystallizes in them and kills them in rather unpleasant ways. Would that this generation would actually bother to take a good hard look at what they simply go along with.

Would that I could scream out to everyone that it DOESN'T MATTER AT ALL what you think, what you feel, only what is true. Obey the truth and live, or pay it lip-service and suffer more than you can possibly ever think or guess. Do you think justice really gives a damn what we "feel" is right? How many historical monsters and atrocities have started based on what people have felt to be right? Trust yourself to be the arbiter of truth at your own eternal peril.
