As one who is attempting to keep his hearing as good as possible for as long as possible, I deeply resent how loud everyone plays music anymore. I've pretty much come to the point where I can no longer attend any concerts without earplugs (or my fingers in my ears the entire time when I forget), but I really don't know what to do everywhere else. My hearing challenged friends and roommates can no longer hear the softer sounds, so they have to crank their music in the car. Being one not easily confrontative or combatative, I have a difficult time asking them to turn it down. Likewise, I don't know what to do when they crank the tv, or when stores play music too loud. I'm basically getting to the point where I can go to very few places without wanting to clap my hands over my ears, and I am finding myself terribly disgruntled. Being able to keep my hearing should not be such a trial. I love being able to hear soft and gentle noises, to hear the slight scratch of something, or to be able to tell when someone just arrived by the sound of their car on gravel.

I deeply resent the assault of too-loud sound on my ears constantly. I also resent the fact that so few people seem to care. We have entire industries devoted to recovering or preventing the loss of other faculties. There are a million eye doctors out there. There are tons of physical rehabilitation clinics. There are myriad practices for hair loss, health loss, and you name it. Yet, no one seems to care about their hearing, and that infuriates me, particularly because their loss causes them to make things louder, which damages mine. My roommate is already at the stage of hearing loss in his early twenties that my dad didn't have until his forties. There is something deeply wrong with this picture.

Me!
