A former roommate has gone and done it: he's gotten me addicted to the Vampire Diaries. I should feel shame, maybe, but it's just so damn good, that I really don't. I'd seen commercials before, but it looked like more of the Twilight crap, with a bit of Buffy thrown in, and maybe a touch of Roswell. I thought he was joking when I saw it in his Netflix and said he loved it. Nope. Turns out, this show is just all sorts of awesome.
I was so not interested in watching another CW teen drama show. Imagine my most grateful surprise to discover it doesn't do all the same old teen drama crap. Well, it does, and it doesn't. Specifically, I love that they don't do all the same old hackneyed and clichéd things that so many shows rely on. I mean, all that will-they-won't-they crap gets old so very fast, especially, especially, when it's due to some stupid, pointless misunderstanding that could have been cleared up with but a simple explanation.
Oh, how lovely it has been to discover that that is exactly what this show does! It explains! People actually talk, actually communicate! They trust each other enough (most of the time) to hear the other person out. No one stays confused for half a season wondering what another person thinks or means. They actually ask. Or tell. The characters are observant, and even the d-bags are fleshed out so that they're not simply 2D cut-outs. There's still much in the way of drama, but I have to say how much I enjoy watching a show that's intelligent for a change. People are multifaceted, they change their minds, they make up, they plot, they see the effect of their actions and change.
I'm devouring the show. I just watched the entire first season in about a week. I'm really going to miss one of the characters, though. She was super cute...
